WYL Book Launch and a Chance to Reinvent My Passion!
Wellington chapter continues...
Just as I quoted in a recent article of mine, "We all have dreams - to be whatever we want to be or to do whatever we want to do. Dream is the destiny and the path to get there is called PASSION. And passion can never die nor can it fade, give it the time and effort it deserves to embrace your destiny"
We all had and still have our inspiration and aspiration, which is like an inspiring force that drives us to accomplish anything that we set our mind to and let us live life to the fullest. To me that has been and is - arts! As a kid I used to recreate illustrations in my text books, spending hours together to get the exact same shades of colours. I used to feel proud displaying my creation to friends and family, may be the reason why I never kept a copy of my work of art but always gave it away to someone who asked for it. Like everything else, passion must also be nurtured and that's something that went missing in my case. My family was hell-bent on creating a musician and unfortunately, my talent was different. Had I been trained or encouraged to take up arts seriously, I would have ended up differently. Nevertheless, I am happy that life gave me another chance to reinvent my passion, invest time and energy and come out successful.
As they say, when the time is right things take a favourable turn and the year 2014, in a way, proved favourable to my long lost passion. It may be that my lucky stars just aligned so perfectly that I was roped in to assist someone in a project of reviving "Welcome Young Lady", a book of great value and history, which was then out of print. A team of 5 ladies was set up and I was expected to suggest a cover page design and a few graphic elements to bring some visual relief in the text. Taking up sketching / drawing after a gap of 15 years, I knew where I stood and my chances, however, I wanted to give it a try, not for anyone else but for myself, to see if I still had that creative spark in me.
I spent days together thinking of a concept for cover page, making drafts, after drafts and finally deciding on this.
Since it went with the concept of the book, the sample was accepted and I was asked to go ahead with it. With another 2 ladies, with skills much better than mine also in picture, I was still not sure if I stood any chance. But again, I wanted to improve my own digital editing skills and so I took up the challenge, once again, for myself. I found a nice backdrop image to go with the theme of the book and tried layering the first drawing over it. I then applied a few basic photoshop skills and came up with something like this.
Passion is more than just enthusiasm and excitement; it is what makes the impossible possible. My efforts surpassed my own expectations and the cover design got finalized and approved. This was further edited and polished by professional designers, which now enjoys its place as the "cover page". Apart from the cover design, I also did about 15 cartoon illustrations for the book, one for each chapter.
The book was launched on 17th of January 2015 in Mumbai. Although I and the other ladies who contributed could not attend the event, we are more than happy that during the book launch each one of us were acknowledged and thanked for our willing contributions.
A definite feel good factor this new year and a gentle reminder that it is always the right time to get back to what you love doing!
